Afghan Parliamentarians Discuss Future with Key Brussels Institutions
Building on the achievements of its work on Women, Peace and Security (WPS), the Parliamentarians Network for Conflict Prevention co-organized a study visit for Afghan parliamentarians to Brussels in October 2012, partnering with the Office for Promotion for Parliamentary Democracy (OPPD) of the European Parliament and the European External Action Service (EEAS).
The delegation of mostly female Afghan Members of Parliament took part in high-level consultations with international and EU institutions. They engaged with Members of the European Parliament, amongst others with MEP Thijs Berman, chair of the European Parliament Delegation for Relations with Afghanistan, EU officials, the President of the Belgian parliament André Flahaut, as well as with senior officials from NATO, including the first woman Assistant Secretary General for Public Diplomacy, Ambassador Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic.
The visit presented an opportunity for the parliamentarians to voice their hopes and concerns as representatives of the people of Afghanistan in order to promote their role in international political bodies and engage in discussions on peace and security with regards to the future of Afghanistan.
